Will Marijuana Finally Be Legalized by 2012?

So far, it has a 0-3 record of losses... But will this time be different?

Backers of a new effort to legalize marijuana in Nevada plan to file an initiative petition to qualify for the 2012 ballot.

A group called Nevadans for Sensible Marijuana Laws say they will file the paperwork with the secretary of state’s office in Carson City on Wednesday. They plan a news conference at 1 p.m. outside the Capitol to discuss details of their proposal to tax and regulate marijuana.

Organizers will need to gather 97,002 signatures by November to send it to the 2011 Legislature. If lawmakers fail to act, it would be put to voters in 2012.

We really should legalize marijuana in this state. It's embarrassing that our supposedly "libertarian, freedom-loving state" still hasn't changed these archaic and draconian drug laws.

Cannabis has been used medicinally for countless generations. It's safer to use than tobacco or alcohol. So why are we still arresting so many people and overcrowding our prisons over it?

Let's hope the madness ends soon and cannabis can be legalized so that we can stop overcrowding the prisons and let people live their lives in peace.
